Funding the Proof of Concept
We are currently raising £10,000 in seed capital to shoot a cinematic 3-minute Proof of Concept. Rather than funding administrative overheads or development salaries, every pound raised is deployed directly onto the screen. This asset will establish our raw, realistic visual style and serve as the primary packaging tool to lock in major equity partners, A-list talent attachments, and BFI backing for the full feature production.

Set against the harrowing backdrop of the 1944 Slovak National Uprising, Ashes of Courage is far more than a historical feature film; it is an urgent, personal rescue mission to preserve the living memory of my family’s survival. My grandfather’s village was burned, and my family lived through the terror of the alpine winter under the constant, immediate threat of execution. As the last generation of eyewitnesses passes away, this film represents a vital race against time to translate oral history into a visceral, cinematic monument.
The film’s emotional weight relies on a structural, narrative dualism that contrasts two distinct survival arenas. Pavel’s journey into the partisan front of the White Carpathian mountains will be captured with sweeping, anamorphic widescreen cinematography to emphasize the overwhelming, hostile vastness of the landscape. The camera movement here will be dynamic, tense, and exposed, reflecting the constant, exhausting threat of pursuit. Conversely, Anastasia’s journey on the domestic front within the occupied village will be intimate, claustrophobic, and intensely character-driven. Utilizing handheld cameras, natural or candle-lit interiors, and exceptionally tight framing, we will place the audience directly into her shoes as she uses her sharp wits and maternal instinct to shield her six children from imminent, sudden violence.
We are actively rejecting the glossy, romanticised aesthetic of traditional Hollywood war epics in favour of a gritty, grounded realism. The visual grammar of Ashes of Courage will be rooted in a desaturated and oppressive colour palette dominated by the stark, piercing whites of Slovakian snow, the deep charcoals of burning timbers, and the cold greys of winter mud. Every costume, prop, and location must carry historical weight. Sound design will play a critical role in building this tension; rather than relying on an overbearing orchestral score, the atmospheric landscape will be built through heavy silence, the crunch of snow under boots, the desperate breathing of characters in hiding, and the sudden, terrifying crack of period-accurate gunfire. By marrying the raw, psychological tension of a survival thriller with the historical gravity of a prestige drama, this project bridges the gap between commercial European cinema and major festival trajectories, ensuring that the sacrifices made in the mountains and villages of Czechoslovakia are never forgotten.
